The Director evaluates the skills needed for faculty research requests and coordinates the work of the professional librarians needed to complete the requests. The Director is responsible for departmental planning, including space, personnel, budget, statistics, workflow and allocation of workload. In addition, the Director assigns priorities to the work to be accomplished. The Director also provides reference service assisting users in legal research to utilize print, microform, and digital information resources and actively participates in the teaching of legal research classes, including classes for advanced legal research as well as online training and other workshops and classes given throughout the year. The Director and the professional librarians prepare instructional materials and exercises for training classes and other written materials to help facilitate the use of the library and encourage the utilization of available resources. In addition, the Director, with the assistance of the reference librarians, conducts library orientation programs, prepares and edits research guides. The Director of Reference and Research Services works with the Director and Associate Directors of the Law Library to plan for the expansion and improvement of reference services to faculty and students. The Director may be asked to represent the law library on other law school and library system committees and at various meeting and other functions. Experience and Training Required: A JD from an ABA-accredited law school and a graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent. Requirements also include successful administrative experience at a high level in an academic law library including a demonstrated ability to manage staff, reference services and management, and strong leadership skills. Candidates must have knowledge of legal bibliography and a good understanding of the scholarly needs of faculty and students. Candidates must also have the ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines; a strong commitment to enhancing service through teamwork; and a proactive approach to library services. This requires the candidate to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and mediation skills and the ability to provide leadership for and work effectively with library, faculty, students as well as members of the UC Berkeley community. In addition, candidates must have an understanding of contemporary issues facing law libraries and reference services departments.
