Summary: Oversee the operation of all library public service functions, including the supervision of student workers during evening and weekend hours.  Monitor shelves and stacks maintenance, loose-leaf filing, and filing of microforms.  Responsible for managing interlibrary loans, course reserves and exam database.  Conduct evening reference. 

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in selection, training and supervision of part-time assistants assigned to circulation and collection maintenance; ensure adequate staffing and coverage; monitor substitute requests; monitor part-time assistants and patron interaction.  Assign routine tasks such as photocopying, filing, re-shelving and shelf-reading to part- time student assistants; supervise their work to ensure accuracy.
  • Provide direct reference assistance to patrons in person and on the phone answering both informational and more complex reference questions.  Some teaching responsibilities are involved in this position.  Cover some reference desk hours. 
  • Participate in collection development.
  • Enforce library policies.  Handle all problems that arise with patrons or our facility during evening and weekend hours.  Open and close library.
  • Handle interlibrary loan requests using OCLC First Search system to search for materials in other libraries.  Fulfill requests from other libraries to borrow materials from our collection.
  • Monitor and direct the physical maintenance of the law library’s stacks collection, open reserve area, and storage facility; create and monitor methods for re-shelving and shelf-reading the collection; conduct and oversee missing book searches and report final status to Head of Circulation for resolution; organize special projects such as book shifts.
  • Assign loose-leaf filing to student workers.  Solve filing problems and report missing pages to Serials Assistant for claiming.
  • Process course reserve materials.  Consult directly with faculty regarding their course reserve needs to ensure accuracy, completeness and retention period; manage addition, retention and withdrawal of course reserve materials.  Replace missing course reserve materials.
  • Provide students with access to copies of old final exams by making copies of the exams available online and in hard copy.
  • Supervise filing and maintenance of microforms; work with the Documents / Microforms Librarian in space planning and microform shifts.  Assist patrons in use of microforms and equipment.
  • Compile statistics and data; prepare summary reports and lists, as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

This job supervises student assistants.

WHAT: The Sacramento County Public Law Library is seeking a beginning or experienced public services librarian to become a full-time member of the library's Public Services Team. The Public Services Librarian reports directly to the Assistant Director for Public Services. 

WHERE: Founded in 1891, the Sacramento County Public Law Library is a public law library operating under California Business and Professions Code Sec. 6200 et. seq. PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • As a member of the public services team, develops, implements, and maintains library services for external customers, and performs any professional or para-professional duty essential to the achievement of effective library operations.

  • Promotes library services to the local community.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

·         Library science masters degree from an ALA-accredited institution 

Any combination of the following that would likely provide the required knowledge to successfully perform the job duties: 

·         Training in law librarianship and legal bibliography·         Juris Doctor degree (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited institution

The Gordon D. Schaber Law Library seeks an enthusiastic candidate to be our next Assistant Director of Public Services and Legal Research. The Assistant Director of Public Services and Legal Research is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the overall Public Services operations of the Gordon D. Schaber Law Library, and participates actively in the Law School’s Global Lawyering Skills course. As head of the public services department, the Assistant Director oversees a talented and experienced professional staff with duties encompassing reference services, research and instructional support, computer services, interlibrary loan, circulation, and collection maintenance; the Assistant Director of Public Services also provides reference, instructional, and outreach services. Candidates should have a global perspective on legal education, have the capacity to teach in the School of Law’s expansive Global Lawyering Skills course (legal process, legal research, legal writing, advocacy and lawyering skills), and the ability to work collaboratively in creative curriculum development, with a primary focus on legal research.  The ideal candidate will teach in the Global Lawyering Skills class or may teach Advanced Legal Research.  The Assistant Director for Public Services and Legal Research serves on the Library’s Collection Development Committee, works closely with the Assistant Dean of the Law Library and the Assistant Director of Technical Services on general library administration and management, including space planning, and generally is part of the Law Library management team.

OVERVIEW 

The Habeas Corpus Resource Center (HCRC), located in San Francisco, has an exciting opportunity for a Research and Information Management Specialist in an agency that provides legal representation to death-row inmates. The primary purpose of the HCRC is to represent death row inmates in post-conviction proceedings in state and federal courts and to serve as a resource to private appointed counsel in capital post-conviction proceedings.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides lead direction to HCRC docketing, library and information resources staff and consultant
  • Organizes and assigns work, sets priorities, and follows up to ensure     completion and quality of assigned work;
  • Provides input into selection, evaluation, discipline, and other personnel matters;
  • Plans, organizes and performs the full range of work involved in operating and maintaining a research and information management system and library for the HCRC;
  • Researches, recommends and applies new technologies appropriate to HCRC needs in the areas of library, research and information management.
  • Investigates, analyzes and evaluates project feasibility;
  • develops project cost and benefit estimates; estimates project resource needs for staff and consultants;
  • Instructs, trains and assists staff, including attorneys, paralegals, investigators, externs, and other staff members in legal bibliography, manual and computerized legal and public records research and document management;

  • Keeps up with current technologies (e.g., reading publications and attending seminars) and applies updates to hardware and software in the HCRC;
  • Represents the HCRC in library and information systems professional committees and Organizations;
  • Plans the layout of space and recommends the purchase of furniture, equipment, and supplies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: 

Equivalent to possession of a bachelor’s degree, preferably with major course work in information management, library science, computer science, or related fields and three years experience in research and information system management, document management, and information system design and technology. 

Additional experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.  Possession of a directly related postgraduate degree may be substituted for one year of experience.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge of: 

  • Basic supervisory principles and practices;
  • Principles and concepts related to computer science, library/information studies, communications, and other disciplines involved in document management and electronic reference archives;
  • Theories and practices related to storing, organizing, retrieving, and analyzing information in a variety of settings and formats;

 The California Judicial Center Library in San Francisco has a regular, full-time job opening for an Assistant Law Librarian I or II. The position will be staffed at a level commensurate with the qualifications of the selected individual. 

THE CALIFORNIA JUDICIAL CENTER LIBRARY

The California Judicial Center Library serves the legal information needs of the justices and staff of the California Supreme Court and the California Court of Appeal, First Appellate District; and the staff of the Administrative Office of the Courts.  The Library's collection of more than 250,000 volumes is located in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles.  Assistant Law Librarians I/II are assigned to the San Francisco location, a 45,000 square foot facility located in the Hiram Johnson State Building, 455 Golden Gate Avenue. 

Under direction from the Coordinator, Research and Reference Services, the Assistant Law Librarians I/II perform a full range of professional law library duties associated with the delivery of legal information, including but not limited to: conducting legal research; responding to reference inquiries; providing instruction in the use of electronic and other published resources; conducting library tours and orientations; developing bibliographies and pathfinders; and designing/updating Web-based information resources for the library’s homepage. 

 RESPONSIBILITIES

The University of California, Irvine School of Law seeks a creative, knowledgeable, energetic, user-centered law librarian to serve as the founding Associate Law Librarian for Public Services.

 The University of California, Irvine School of Law is the first new law school to be established at a member institution of the Association of American Universities and a public university in California in half a century. The founding Associate Law Librarian for Public Services will have the opportunity to participate in developing all aspects of the new library and in implementing our vision to create the ideal law school for the 21st century. Specifically, the Associate Law Librarian for Public Services will play a key role in recruiting staff, building collections (print and electronic), developing the Law Library's web presence, and providing effective user services. Reporting directly to the School's Associate Dean of Library and Information Services, the Associate Law Librarian for Public Services oversees the daily operations and ongoing activities of the Law Library and serves as part of the Law Library's management team.

 Duties and Responsibilities

 §         Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean of Library and Information Services, participates in all aspects of library administration, including budget administration, facilities planning and personnel management.

§         Serves as part of the Library's management team, together with the Associate Dean and the Associate Law Librarian for Technical Services.

§         Takes front-line responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Law Library.

§         In consultation with the Associate Dean, directs the activities of the public services units of the Law Library, including reference, collection development, and access services.

§         Oversees and develops the Law Library's web presence, which includes providing easy access to electronic resources, developing online user guides and other web-based services, and undertaking digitization projects.

§         Coordinates the Law Library's publications program, including research guides, brochures and annual reports.

§         Participates as a member of the reference services unit, providing faculty research, reference, instruction, and collection development functions.

§         Represents the Law Library on various Law School, campus-wide, and Library System committees and at various meetings and other functions.

§         Works closely with the UCI Libraries to coordinate services and collaborate on resource sharing.

§         Directly supervises key public services staff and provides training and professional development opportunities to improve staff effectiveness.  

Qualifications

Required:

§         J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution.

§         Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.

§         Substantial, successful experience in academic law libraries.

§         Strong ability to develop excellent library services, collections, and organizational units from the ground up.

§         Extensive knowledge of the legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats.

§         Experience and strong interest in developing and managing collections in law, both print and electronic.

§         Successful experience in providing and demonstrated commitment to developing and managing user-centered library services.

§         Significant experience and skill in providing reference services.

  • Performs cataloging and classification of resources in all formats received in the Library as needed.
  • Serves as a resource for staff to resolve complex problems.
  • Takes primary responsibility for the logistics involved in acquiring, cataloging, processing and staging the Law Library's initial acquisition of its core collection.
  • Oversees expenditure of the collections budget.
  • Responsible for keeping Associate Dean informed of important technical services issues, both local and national relating to law libraries and collections.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in technical services and recommends innovations in the department as appropriate.
  • Works with Technical Services staff in the University Libraries to coordinate policies and procedures and enhance consistency and cooperation.

Qualifications
