The Law Library comprises one of the largest law collections in the world. It
houses an extensive collection of Anglo-American, international, civil,
comparative, and human rights law. In addition, the Law Library is home to the
prestigious Robbins Collection of rare and religious materials. The Law
Library's Reference Desk is one of the busiest in the nation, serving a
faculty of more than 60, numerous adjunct and visiting professors and
lecturers, 900 JD students, 150 LLM students, 75 Summer LLM students, graduate
students from the School of Jurisprudence and Social Policy, and approximately
100 visiting scholars each year. The Reference Desk also supports the Law
Library's Advanced Legal Research course, which approximately 90 students take
each semester, and a seminar on international and foreign legal research each
spring. These courses provide legal research training for a variety of other
law school courses. The Reference Librarians also assist undergraduate
researchers from the UCB campus (including students in the Legal Studies
major) and faculty from other campus departments. In addition, the Law Library
is a public library, serving a significant number of attorneys, pro se
litigants, and members of the public who are engaged in legal research for a
variety of purposes. The Law School has a wide variety of research centers,
many of which have an international or comparative law component. The Law
School is situated on the beautiful University of California, Berkeley,
campus, which is home to a wide variety of libraries, including the Doe
Library and numerous subject area and affiliated libraries.
Overview of Responsibilities

Under the general direction of, and reporting to, the Reference and Research
Services Director, provide high-level, in-depth reference and research
assistance in a dynamic and challenging environment to faculty, students, and
other library users.

Working with the Law Library's web developer, the Legal Research Librarian for
Information Technology and Scholarly Communication designs, develops, and
implements technologically innovative services and applications and web-based
access to information resources. Oversees and produces library web content and
develops related best practices and procedures. The position monitors and
investigates emerging technologies related to the delivery of library services
and digital collections, and assists in the development and deployment of
these new technologies. The position will develop research guides,
instructional materials, and workshops and trainings for students, faculty,
and library staff in the use of library electronic resources and tools.

Provides outreach and education on scholarly communication issues to the Law
School community. Monitors and reports on current developments affecting
scholarly publishing, particularly open access and institutional repositories.
Provides leadership, expertise, direction, and planning for the Law Library's
support of scholarly communication and the development of a robust
institutional repository. Responsible for assessing faculty and student
scholarly communication needs, and providing services to support digital
scholarship and the production of digital content. Serves as an advocate for
new forms and practices of scholarly communication. Develops educational
opportunities for sharing information on scholarly communication, open access,
and institutional repositories.

Librarians are also expected to participate in other aspects of Law School
life that will further the mission of the Law Library and Law School.
Participates in campus library and planning committees and task forces, and
regional and national professional organizations.
Experience and Training

Required: Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited library
school or equivalent. Preferred: A JD from an ABA-accredited law school. Law
library public service experience is highly desirable. Library training and
experience must demonstrate an ongoing and active commitment to public service
in a diverse environment. Candidates must have thorough knowledge of legal
bibliography as well as a mastery of legal research sources in both print and
electronic formats.

Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly publishing, new models for scholarly
communication, and the associated technical, legal, and information policy
issues. Proven knowledge and experience of institution-wide repositories and
the ability to communicate their benefits. Expertise in the creation,
dissemination, and use of digital information resources.

Familiarity with contemporary web standards such as HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript;
familiarity with bibliographic markup standards such as MARC, Dublin Core,
MODS/METS, RDF; awareness of current trends and developments in library and
information technology; knowledge of integrated library systems. Experience
with content management systems such as WordPress, Drupal, et al., and
scripting languages such as PHP or Ruby is desirable.

Candidates must also have the ability to balance priorities and meet
deadlines; a strong commitment to enhancing service through teamwork; and a
proactive approach to library services. This requires the candidate to
demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving
skills.

work a regular reference rotation under the general direction of the Reference
and Research Services Director. The librarians at Berkeley Law are responsible
for providing high-level, in-depth reference and research assistance in a
dynamic and challenging environment. The Law Library serves law faculty,
students and staff at a research-oriented law school with a strong tradition
of interdisciplinary scholarship, as well as researchers from other scholarly
and legal communities. These include members of the University of California
community, private attorneys, and members of the general public.

Work closely with the Associate Director for Collections in providing faculty
members, clinical programs, seminars, and research centers with individualized
research assistance, and develop training programs focusing on foreign and
comparative law sources. Provide reference assistance to all users of the Law
Library, including responding to chat, email reference inquiries, and
providing other forms of research assistance as needed. Meet with law students
regarding individual research projects for seminars, clinics, writing
requirement, etc. Also prepare guides and other online training materials
related to research methodology in foreign and comparative law.

Participate in collection development for print and electronic resources, with
a focus on foreign and comparative law. Work as a member of the collection
development team on database decisions, promotion of the collection, and
collect analysis.

Assist in library planning and help in setting priorities for the library's
services to faculty, students and other library users. Contribute to content
development and maintenance of the library's website.

Participate in other aspects of Law School life that will further the mission
of the Law Library and Law School. Librarians are also expected to take part
in Library and campus planning committees and task forces, and to participate
in campus, regional and national professional development activities.
Experience and Training

Required: Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited library
school or equivalent. A JD from an ABA-accredited law school preferred.
Education or experience in relevant subject areas and reading knowledge of at
least one foreign language, preferably an Asian language. Library training and
experience must demonstrate an ongoing and active commitment to public service

legal research sources in both print and electronic formats. Must be able to

THE ROLE

DESCRIPTION: 

This position reports to the Access Services Librarian and assists in the daily operations of the library. Hours include Wednesday through Saturday evenings. 

DUTIES:

Staffs the loan desk; checks Stanford ID to establish eligibility to use Library. Provides basic information to patrons concerning the collection, and general facilities; responds to telephone requests; transcribes requests from faculty and refers to supervisor; refers reference questions to librarians. Pages and delivers library materials to faculty offices. Charges and discharges books/recordings/equipment/room keys; files charge cards, administers sign-up procedure for use of conference rooms. Notifies patrons of available books on hold; searches for missing books; uses various online systems. Collects statistics. Reports patron complaints about photocopiers/card dispensers, and other library equipment to supervisor. Adds paper/toner to laser printers and fax machine; turns on/shuts down department computers. Performs other special projects or duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS:Ability to maintain a pleasant disposition in a bustling environment, provide service with a smile, and work effectively with the public at a busy loan desk. Must be able to learn and apply library regulations in a tactful and courteous manner. Must have a proven work record for dependability and punctuality. Previous library experience in a service position in a public library setting, including knowledge of LC call numbers is preferred. Effective oral and written communication skills including ability to transcribe telephone messages accurately. 

Must communicate effectively in clearly spoken English.

Must have the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people. Must have basic computer and word processing skills and be able to type 50-60 wpm accurately. The Research Law Librarian for Instructional Services will have the opportunity to participate in further developing the Law Library and in implementing our vision to create the ideal law school for the 21st century. Specifically, the Research Law Librarian for Instructional Services will play a key role in further developing the Law Library's legal research curriculum as part of the first-year Lawyering Skills course, as well as developing and implementing additional teaching partnerships with upper-division courses.  Reporting to the Head of Research Services, the Research Law Librarian for Instructional Services also will participate in the Law Library's outstanding faculty service program, share in collection development responsibilities, and provide effective user services at the Reference Desk.

Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred appointment level: Associate Librarian or Librarian. Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.

Leadership:

Assists in the development of the budget for the Law Library and Self Help Center based on analysis of current usage and projection of future needs. Presents findings to Court Administration who reports to the Law Library Board of Trustees. Oversees the administration of the Law Library and Self Help Center budget, ensuring staffing levels, equipment requests, and supply expenditures do not exceed approved budget.

The Law Library comprises one of the largest law collections in the world. It houses an extensive collection of Anglo-American, international, civil, comparative, and human rights law. In addition, the Law Library is home to the prestigious Robbins Collection of rare and religious materials. The Law Library's Reference Desk is one of the busiest in the nation, serving a faculty of more than 60, numerous adjunct and visiting professors and lecturers, 900 JD students, 100 LLM students, graduate students from the School of Jurisprudence and Social Policy, and approximately 100 visiting scholars each year. The Reference Desk also supports the Law Library's Advanced Legal Research course, which is taken by approximately 90 students each semester, and a seminar on international legal research, which is taught each spring, and provides legal research training for a variety of other law school courses. The Reference Librarians also provide assistance to undergraduate researchers from the UCB campus (including students in the Legal Studies major) and faculty from other campus departments. In addition, the Law Library is a public library, serving a significant number of attorneys, pro se litigants, and members of the public who are engaged in legal research for a variety of purposes. The Law School is working on expanding the breadth of some of the existing research centers and creating new centers, all of which may have an international or comparative law component. The Law School is situated on the beautiful University of California, Berkeley, campus, which is home to a wide variety of libraries, including the Doe Library and numerous subject area and affiliated libraries

Overview of Responsibilities

The Director of Collections Service works with the Associate Law Librarian and the other departmental directors to function as the library's management team and to participate in all aspects of library administration; including, budget administration, facilities planning, programmatic initiatives, personnel management and technology matters, and assisting in long-range planning for the library. Generally, department directors' responsibilities include the development, implementation and monitoring of their department's programs, services, policies, and procedures as well as organization, allocation and supervision of personnel and fiscal resources in the department and coordinating those programs, services, policies and procedures with those of the other law library departments, programs and sections.

In addition, the Director is responsible for the overall administration of the Collection Services department, which includes overseeing and integrating the operations of acquisitions, serials, cataloging, and preservation. The department has a staff of 4 FTE professional librarians (including the director) and 10 FTE staff personnel as well as 6 FTE part-time student employees.

The Director of Collections Service is responsible for departmental planning, including space, personnel, budget, statistics, workflow and allocation of workload. The Director assigns priorities to the work to be accomplished by the units within Collection Services. The Director reports to the Associate Law Librarian for Collections and meets regularly to discuss operational requirements of the department in the context of the mission and goals of the Library and the Law School, and to advise her on matters of policy, procedure, technology, and personnel related to Collection Services.

Working with the Collection Development team, the Director of Collections Service makes final decisions on the purchase of all US legal materials. The Director administers the allocation of a $1.6 million book and database budget; supervises all library monograph and serials orders; evaluates vendors; negotiates and evaluates purchase agreements; sets policies and procedures regarding the collection; and assures the accuracy and completeness of transactions relating to the acquisition of library materials.

The Director of Collections Service supervises and manages the staff involved with issues relating to cataloging and classification of serials and monographs in all formats received in the Law Library, and works with the Head of Cataloging to plan and manage reclassification projects and other initiatives. The Director also works with the library's special collections, archival and preservation initiatives.

The Director of Collections Service works closely with all other departments of the Law Library and keeps the Law Librarian and Associate Law Librarians informed of all collection services issues, both local and national. The Director is responsible for keeping abreast of new developments in collection services and encouraging innovation where appropriate.

Experience and Training

Required: Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent. A JD from an ABA-accredited law school preferred. Requirements also include successful administrative experience at a high level in an academic law library including a demonstrated ability to manage staff, collection services and management, and budgets in library setting and strong leadership skills. Candidates must have extensive collection development experience with a deep and varied legal collection, including knowledge of legal bibliography and publishing practices. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to manage electronic resources and a good understanding of the scholarly communications as well as future trends.

Candidates must also have the ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines; a strong commitment to enhancing service through teamwork; and a proactive approach to library and collection services.
