 Tuesday - March 12, 2002, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

  • $25.00 fee includes continental breakfast and luncheon (vegetarian items available).

PROGRAM

Participants will:

  • Receive training in advocacy techniques
  • Practice these techniques with colleagues
  • Review an information packet with background on issues important to California law librarians
  • Visit their legislators at the State Capitol to discuss these issues
  • Information packets to leave with legislators will also be provided.

WORKSHOP AGENDA

  • 8:00 a.m. Registration and distribution of advocacy packets; continental breakfast

  • 9:00 Welcome and Introduction of Speakers:  

    • Shirley David, Director of the Sacramento County Law Library

  • 9:15 - 10:15 Keynote Address: 

    • Keynote Address: "Effective Legislative Advocacy Techniques," Michael Mattoch, Chief Consultant to the Assembly Insurance Committee
  • 10:15 - 11:15 Roundtable:
    • "Effective Legislative Advocacy Tips from the Professionals"  
      • Moderator: Carolina Rose, Director of Legislative Research, Inc. and former Chief of Staff for Senator Nicholas C. Petris.
      • Michael Y. Corbett, Owner of Corbett & Associates, a Sacramento-based government relations and consulting firm representing the Council of California County Law Librarians, the California Judicial Council, and several governmental agencies.
      • Frances Fort, Senior Consultant to Darrell Steinberg, Assembly Member, 9th District.
  • 11:15-12:15 p.m. Buffet Luncheon

  • 12:15-12:30 Issue Brief:

    • "Funding for California County Law Libraries," Charles R. Dyer, Director of the San Diego County Law Library
  • 12:30 - 1:15 Role Play Exercise:

    • Small groups will review the issues and practice advocacy techniques (information packet provided). Each group will include at least one county law librarian.

  • 1:15 -3:30  Visits to legislators (scheduled appointments) at the State Capitol

  • 4:00 -5:00  Evaluation / Debriefing: What’s next?
